Effective immediately- Updates on CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1

Navigating the maze of applicable standards for your product and intended markets is a full-time job. Our experts are monitoring the changes and keeping abreast of how that affects your products’ time to market. The recent change over of IEC 60950-1 for Information Technology Equipment (ITE) to the IEC 62368-1 standard is the case in point.

The Standards Council of Canada has recently withdrawn CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1:2014. The withdrawal of the 2014 edition (commonly referred to as the 2nd edition) comes on the heels of the withdrawal of CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1 and CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1:2012 on December 20, 2020. This forces all new certification for ITE and audio video products for Canada to use CSA C22.2 No. 62368-1:2019 or the 3rd edition of the standard.

As we see, this creates an interesting dilemma for companies wishing to market products to multiple countries as the Official Journal for the EU still has not accepted EN 62368-1 3rd edition. Companies will need to either certify to two different versions of the standard (3rd edition for Canada and 2nd edition for the EU) or justify how their product satisfies compliance to a standard without presumption of conformity.

This is something to consider if you anticipate bringing your product into new markets or expand your offerings into new countries. In conclusion, if you have questions about your product’s certification, you should ask the experts at Professional Testing for an evaluation and a discuss a strategy for your products’ continued compliance.
